Overview

Created by Rebecca Rose for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (CTLL), this Subject Guide provides a resource for all faculty, including those participating in Faculty Academy on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning should be understood within the larger framework of Ernest Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities of the Professoriate (1990). The University of Saskatchewan offers a quick overview of The Legacy of Ernest Boyer. Vanderbilt Univeristy's Center for Teaching provides a good introduction to the field.

Where to Start

  • Vanderbilt's SoTL Guide
Vanderbilt's Center for Teaching SoTL Guide: A Guide to Understanding and Doing SoTL offers 1) a brief introduction to understanding and the process of doing SoTL, and 2) tutorial PDFs that cover the basics of designing a SoTL project.
  • ISSOTL13 Introduction to SoTL
See under Program > ISSOTL Online 2013. For the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning, there was an online conference that had three tracks: Intro to SoTL, Studying and Designing for Transfer, and Student Voices in SoTL. These were recorded and provide some excellent information on the field. Each week has featured readings. They seem to work well in Firefox browser.
  • Carnegie Foundation's Opening Lines: Approaches to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning  Icon
Pat Hutchings, Senior Scholar of The Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching, offer an introduction. This publication provides eight case studies of significant questions in teaching and learning.
  • What is SoTL and What Can SoTL Do for You and Your Department/School
This handout for deans, chairs, directors, and other adminstrators was drafted by Illinois State members of the AAHE/Carnegie SoTL Cluster "Organizing to Foster the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning" (2004). The handouts define SoTL, provide some evaluation criteria for P&T consideration, and point to additional resources.
